Director’s Report

Busted Rock

Sara wants you to know that she has not been on her photographic A game in the past couple of days.  Little Anya, age 2, has had a cold and been clinging to her mother relentlessly.  I can hear Anya chirping in the next room right now, so it is clear she is on the mend.

I can see she got out to see off the fishing trip after lunch and some water polo during A Block (Anya’s nap time) and took in a bit of the evening sponsorships including fingernail painting and Gaga (Anya’s bed time.)  The Gaga participants make more noise than a herd of wild elephants so one is always commanded to stop by and check out the action.

The fishing party, by the way, reported good success in their catch-and-release plan at the scenic Indian Pond just twenty minutes down the road from camp.  With 8 canoes strapped to the canoe trailer, the trek took on the appearances of a Himalayan mountaineering expedition.  Todd says he took some photos of the boys with their catches and I will follow up and try to get them posted for you.

For me, it was my distinct pleasure to be able to accompany a group of older boys to our favorite swimming hole on the Baker River, whose chilly waters originate near the summit of Mt. Moosilauke.  It is probably both a tradition and a camp rule that Drew Vanasse and I inspect the depth and flow of the river as well as  note any changes in the plunge pools and jumping areas.

We were surprised to see that the river was a bit deeper than normal, which allowed us to open some jumps that were hitherto closed.  We call the place Busted Rock and had it nearly all to ourselves (two friendly locals showed up as we were swimming) for most of our 45 minutes of cooling off on what was a hot day to us.  By “hot,” we mean mid-80’s.

I jumped in, too, as I have every single visit to the Baker River, which has gone on for over 50 consecutive years.  What a great feeling to still be doing things I love, like this!

I gotta go so this will have to do it for now.  Some good rain overnight cut the dust and watered the lawns and gardens, much to my delight.  A few showers are roaming about the area  but I am told that the schedule-makers are sticking to the script until further notice. Have a nice weekend.
