Director’s Report

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

There are four batches of photos for you to soak up the spirit and sheer glory of human endeavor here on the Kingswood grounds.

Start with the album “July 7 by Sara.”  Seems she found her way to morning clinics, to the afternoon U-15 baseball game and to the Lake Swim after dinner.  Look at those spectacular colors on Lake Tarleton.  In my most mediocre albums, you’ll notice many of my photos try to capture not only boys at play but some of the very best landscapes I have witnessed in my 38 years on the job.  Keep this in mind whenever you are scoping out our photographic offerings.

I am so happy that the technology now allows us to capture photos taken by staff, not only off campus but early in the morning before anyone else is stirring.  Check out the album entitled July 4-7 counselor pix arranged for you by Sara. Awesome stuff!

Photo #25 of this set shows a group of boys near the top of our Sunset View campsite.  This view is to the southwest towards the Connecticut River Valley and far off to Vermont. Just behind where the photographer is standing, there is a flat glade just perfect for tents and a small campfire pit.  Best of all, the trail is a 3 minute drive from camp and we are able to offer this hike just about any time the spirit moves us.  Trying to get camping out overnights is one of our staunchest goals.

All the other hiking photos in this set are from Mt. Washington, at 6288 feet, the highest summit in the northeast.  Photo #20 shows the boys crossing the Cog Railway with Mt. Washington automobile road in the background.  Indeed, the lads were somewhat put off by these “cheap” accoutrements to the high summits but that view off to their left into the Great Gulf is one of the best in the hills.

In “July 8 by Sara” you get some of the best wake surfing photos yet taken.  Boys continue to clammer for the opportunity to test their balancing skills behind our new Ski Nautique, dubbed the “Ferrari” by staff.  Allow me to suggest you purchase some of these outstanding glimpses of your kids.

Starting at #19, I, too, heard some commotion on the waterfront at about 4 PM, when the U-13 Ultimate Frisbee team celebrated its tournament victory with a plunge into the palliative waters of Mother Tarleton.  Honestly, we don’t celebrate too hard or too long as we teach boys to take things in stride regardless of the outcome.  Yeah, but jumping into the lake after a win is quite the high, yes?

You can count on Sara to be there for the beginning of every Egg Drop, and she never disappoints.  Which brings us to my set of photos – July 8 Pix – where I also try to get some Egg Drop “money shots” as well.  Assistant to the Director Nathan Marvelle remarked to me just now that this  quintessential Kingswood endeavor was fun from start to finish and maintained both boys’ attention and the staff guys, too, who pulled off one good bit after another until all the eggs were smashed.  What a chuckle.

Today is “Baker Valley Tournament” day and our rosters for this set of eight intercamp competitions are enormous.  Sunny and 80 degrees.  We are scratching our heads over how to get every boy into the games.  Quite the challenge.  More on this in tomorrow’s report.
