Tenure Celebrations
July 24, 2026
In my mind, once a boy has been here for 21 days, he has earned Kingswood tenure. If it pours, he does not care. We’ve already been through this notion several times.
But, near the end of each session, we celebrate Kingswood careers extending from five years to the maximum of forty-two under the current regime.
Everybody with five camp summers or more ate steak last evening and I made it my chore to photo as many of those carnivores as I could. They did move rather quickly past my lens as the meat was hot and tender and no time could be spared from the gobble session. Those having regular picnic fare seemed not that jealous as there was plenty of terrific food for them, too, and on a gorgeous evening to boot.
Old-timer’s day thereafter drifted out to the council circle where tenure-related gear was awarded. Those reaching that magic number of 5 Kingswood summers got those bright green shirts, all of which are adorned with the number 5 on the back.
Two persons reached the magic number of 10, Brian Taylor and Oliver (Swampy) Satola. They got nice jacket-style shirts, better than most anything I wear.
Speaking of what I was wearing, I snuck back to my cabin and donned a button-down collared shirt and tie beneath my heavy sweatshirt before taking my normal council fire position sitting on an old milk can.
The six-year gift is the most prized of them all, as it is something new each year. Camp tradition has it that the wait for the “reveal” is unbearable. Rob Wiff is the guy behind all this hoopla, but this time he turned to me whereupon I shed the sweatshirt to expose the Kingswood tie. The place went wild.
After that, with a pause only for photo ops, we reassembled at the Theater-In-The-Pines for the final concert of the session. It was a beauty and lots of camp leaders are commended for the good job they did at organizing the event. It was an easy read for me as the campers sat respectfully, quietly and with sustained attention on the performances, great as they were.
OK, so that brings us to the very moment. We are expecting a load of parent visitors this afternoon. I do not know any of the program details other than we are ready for all of you and so happy you will see camp in action.
Don’t feel bad if you are unable to attend. We are good at parent day visits and no one will suffer at all if his folks are missing.
