Last evening, a beauty, we had Cabin Carnival. Fat Bob (this director) had fun with his persona, who hated ice cream, children and everything else associated with the occasion. I guess I got a couple of laughs in return.
Come dawn, the administrative team met on the Main Lodge front porch for our usual 7:30 am meeting. It hit us like a ton of bricks that summer is waning and only a few more days remain to get everything into the schedule that we have promised. To be truthful, not every wish gets fulfilled in any given season. The combination of weather, boys’ moods and logistics makes every session a challenge to bring to a fair and logical conclusion.
I was delighted to see so many boys signing up for the two hikes we decided to send out today. You see, it is another beauty of a day and it sure makes sense to offer hiking over indoor theater, as just a simple example of the tough decisions we are faced with all the time. We are quite proud of our ability to be flexible and to change programming on the fly. So, up came Kate just a few minutes ago and with a large smile remarked “I’ve been re-assigned to hike Moosilauke. Let’s get going.” We’ll be sending a party of nineteen, but will stagger the starting times to accommodate two summit teams.
Another group is overnighting in the Franconia Notch area. One summit on the list is Cannon Mountain, a tourist attraction, and the order to our boys is to exhibit a bit of swagger, having walked up the peak rather than taking the tram car. We are looking forward to their stories when they get back. Regular clinics, A/B Block options, a couple tournaments and a dance with the gals from Camp Wa-Klo will be the on-grounds features of the day. The last I saw of my son, Mike, the program guy, he was running about the property like a chicken with his head cut off. Such is camp, or, shall I say “Good Camp?”
