A Block is that daily period from 3 – 4:30. Boys hear about the choices at lunch and have all rest hour to sort things out. While some A Block activities require “sign-ups,” such as hikes or sports contests with other camps, most of the time boys vote with their feet come 3 PM sharp. Naturally, a few counselors are assigned patrol duty at this hour, in order to assure that all campers find something to do. But, that seldom is a problem.
Mike Wiff, especially, is a genius when it comes to designing a daily A Block certain to have something appealing for everybody. He not only listens to feedback and solicits advice, but he also watches the weather very closely. Below are some of Mike’s standard A Block offerings.
While the waterfront is open primarily doing B-Block (4:30), most hot days feature a lake trip like this one to White Sands…or a sailing regatta.Short day trips go out, such as a “mucking” expeditions to Freddy’s Pond…swim trips to nearby waterfalls…or local hikes.Sports games with other camps can be at home…or on the road. But, whenever we leave the Kingswood property, destinations are not far away.Despite the exotic nature of the off-campus events, many boys often select easy, fun and social events like dodge ball…kickball…wiffleball…and dozens (no exaggeration) of home-made games certain to have features like jailbreaks…and “local rules” which allow things like several guys rounding third base at the same time!Even fire-building can have a soft focus on competition …while tennis challenges …maintain that certain Kingswood lightheartedness. Thus, be it box hockey indoors on a rainy day …or the ever-popular tennis ball evasion game on the soccer field,“Action” is the operative word each and every A Block period.
