A Windy Sparkler
July 31, 2023
Sara caught up with yesterday morning’s Deep Clean that occurred in the gustiest wind conditions of the summer. It was cool, maybe even cold to some at first, but as time went on it got a lot more pleasant and I’ll argue that the afternoon hours were amongst the most pleasant so far.
Both Sara’s and my photo albums overlap a bit and while her professional quality photos are superior, I like to show more sky and other background to give you the feeling of really being there. (Note to self: Nice try, Bob.)
Stealth is that capture-the-flag in the woods game that boys not only love, but come back to camp in successive years to play in order not to have a FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) regret. Of course, I pursued the surreptitious brigade into the forest and I’ve posted a few pix with no cropping whatever for the reason cited in the previous paragraph, he he.
Let it be known that all boys have to do is touch the flag in enemy territory without being tagged and they earn a point for their team. If you need any more detail than this on the rules of Stealth, either email me at wiffs5@gmail.com or simply wait for your family reunion to hear more about it than you ever would care to.
Another tradition that cannot be missed is the Packer Generation Basketball intramural competition featuring teams made up of boys from similar age groups. PGB’s are always announced by Klaus, who has a unique ability to hurl ridiculous insults at players, referees and observers while managing to keep abreast of what is happening on the court.
And, while PGB encounters never get that serious (impossible with Klaus at the microphone,) this one was unusually casual. I arrived just as one of the games ended and fell in with the losers, each of whom contended the score was something like 50-49 with he scoring all 49 points in the defeat. Their funny lines had me giggling as much as Klaus’s.
B Block on the waterfront provided to both of us photo hounds with some striking colors. You can tell it is Second Session by the shadows and clouds that accompany all those bright hues.
I have been sitting at a different table for each meal so far in the session. Now I am confident I know all of the campers by name. This does not get easier with age but this is what I do. I am amazed at boys’ appetites, and especially last evening at dinner when fried chicken and baked potatoes headlined the menu. One of each was plenty for me, but some of the boys gorged themselves.
There was plenty of chicken left over, which brought a smile to my face, as we aim to give the boys all they can consume and don’t have a food budget with precise parameters. Maybe I’ll try to feature some meal-time photos for my next album. Indeed, it is cool again today and appetites ought to be good.
