Director’s Report

Afternoons at Kingswood – A-Block

Boys love rest hour.  This we know, as they holler for it all the time.  Kids realize that some down time during the middle of the day is crucial to the proper distribution of energy that carries them all the way to the end of each and every long, action-filled day at camp.

Come 3PM, A-Block commences.  It takes only a couple minutes to shake out the cobwebs of rest hour, so that by 3:05 (we insist on punctuality) the air crackles anew with shouts of glee and contentment.  A-Block is popular since it varies daily, depending on a variety of factors to include the weather, boys’ requests, and special events we save for just the right day.  Boys always get their first choice, too, and many profess to have waited until 2:59 to decide what A-Block hold for them today.  Great camp.

Sara has taken all of the photos shown below.  Hers are fabulous!  With the feeling of spring now in the air, this report guarantees that Kingswood juices will be flowing!

Every day, there are either team practices or games with other camps. More on this in a separate report coming up soon.

The bulk of A-Block offerings are from our huge reservoir of "Kingswood's 100 Games."
The bulk of A-Block offerings are from our huge reservoir of “Kingswood’s 100 Games.”  This is probably “Frisbee Lacrosse,” or Crosby, the basic idea being to score a goal without being tagged.
We have loads of Frisbee games. The "hand up" defensive posture indicates an "Ultimate Frisbee" contest.

"Trashball" is one of those easy social pick up games where scoring sensational goals in the garbage barrels is far more important than the real score of the contest.

We have several versions of kickball. Too screwy and hilarious to spell out here, the game always draws a huge throng.

Speaking of "versions" of games, the "capture-the-flag" motif has more stripes than your basic tiger. If there is not one already, there ought to be a "Camp Capture-the Flag" somewhere in America.

But, not every boy on every day needs a fast-action A-Block. Working on crafts projects is a great way to spend a couple hours on a lazy summer afternoon.

Kingswood's ideal setting on a property surrounded on all sides by White Mountain National Forest lands enables us to offer explorations of some sort or other nearly every A-Block.

This gaggle of boys is headed directly to the Kingswood kitchen, where the cooks will help them bake muffins or pies!

Ah, but the heat of summer eventually finds even those of us staked out in the north woods. We have tons of solutions for that!

offer swim trips to specific age groups as a way of guarding against oversubscription of other popular choices. In a word, A-Block is brilliant!
