Baseball Trading Cards

July 25, 2023

Between Sara’s and my photo offerings are plenty of close-ups of boys.  I made it a point to ask the kids on the ball fields to select the pose they wanted for their “Kingswood Topps Baseball Card, 2023” and it was most amusing to watch them borrow sun glasses and practice their serious grimaces to get just the proper picture.  I might add that I watched some very good baseball being played, maybe the best in a long long time.

Sara and lens were there to capture the first Polar Bear dips of the session at reveille (7:30 am.)  Every person yells “Polar Bear” as loud as they can before diving, cannonballing or simply jumping off the tower and into the palliative waters of Mother Tarleton. She observed some of the same morning clinics as I did but ended up taking most of her photos down at the waterfront both during B Block (4:30 – 6:00) and during the after-dinner sponsorships.

Those photos of guys jumping off the tower to catch Frisbees with the backdrop of the ambient colors of the sunset are real keepers.

Check out the photo in my set of Swampy and Jacob holding up the white board sign of the afternoon options.  Boys love both of these blocks since they are free to choose from among a host of activities.  Mike and the other program guys are certain to offer great variety so that there is something really neat for those of all persuasions.  You might get some hints as to your son’s selections from my pix.

It was a warm and pleasant afternoon and it came as no surprise that hordes of boys descended on the waterfront for B Block. Go back to the white board sign with the understanding that for this block, boys are free to go from one thing to another. (For A Block, one stays at his choice for the full time.) Tubing rides behind the speedboats are immeasurably popular so a lottery is held at the buddy board each afternoon at 4:30.  “Go ahead and be there first,” we tell the kids, “but if you draw number 26, your turn is last!”

That pair, being smart, does some other things while they wait for number 26 to finally get called. Many stay close nearby and either swim or fish, while others head into the Main Lodge or up to Pines Field.  This latter haunt is gorgeous in the late afternoon hours and after dinner as the sun has descended behind many of the, well, pine trees, and both sun and shade are available.

At dinner last night, Mike gave a heads up as to tournament games and a couple of hikes coming the next day, which is now. Mt. Cardigan for junior trampers and the Franconia Range for older boys are on tap.  Soccer, basketball and baseball action commence in the afternoon hours with neighboring camps. I’ll have plenty to say about these endeavors in tomorrow’s post.
