Cast of Characters (Episode #15): Q&A with David Murray

What is your name?

David Murray

How many years have you been at Kingswood / what was your first year at Kingswood?

5 years (2015-2019) Unfortunately missed out in 2021

How would you describe your role at Kingswood?

During my time at Kingswood, it has become clear that it is the waterfront that calls my name. You can find me down there teaching a number of clinics, driving the boat, holding the role of Head Lifeguard during B-block and assisting where needed. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to take on mentor roles, lead hikes and other trips and make the videos you see at home. On the cabin front, I assist the running of Junior cabins each year.

What is your favorite camp memory?

While recording the Bows 2018 commercial, I walked around camp at 6am to get some shots. Not a noise was being made, the sun was rising, and I was able to just stand there and take it all in. I had never had such a serene moment. I love camp with all of its action but in that moment, I was able to appreciate just what a special place I had found. I love that I can always see this moment when I watch the video back.

What makes Kingswood special to you?

Kingswood is like a home away from home. As soon as you walk down the hill into camp you are welcomed as though you have been there for years and instantly feel settled and ready for the adventure that is to come. When you go to Kingswood, you see a lot of familiar faces in both staff and campers, and this just shows how special Kingswood is to all who are fortunate to experience even a day on the shores of Lake Tarleton. Kingswood is a needle in a haystack and I consider myself extremely lucky that my late night google search one weeknight 7 years ago brought Kingswood into my life all the way in Northern Ireland.

What is your favorite place on campus?

The Council Circle

What is your favorite A-block offering?

I’m still trying to get my head around all of the Kingswood original games that are always on offer during A-blocks but my answer for this would be when you are a few weeks into camp it’s always a great opportunity to get off camp and do a little exploration. Examples include, the rope swing, kayaking over to pirates cove, going to Big Eddy or taking a quick trip up Piermont.

If you were a camper, how would you spend your B-Block?

There is a running theme going on throughout my answers. For B-Block I would be down on the waterfront jumping off the dive tower, trying my hand at wakeboarding, chatting with friends and then heading to find a quiet spot on the camp to read on the run up to dinner.

What is your favorite Kingswood hike / trip?

I tried so hard to think of an alternative to the obvious but it has to be the Franconia Ridge.

What is your favorite Kingswood special event (could be an annual event or a truly special,

we only did it once, event)?

End of Session Concert

What is your favorite Kingswood meal?
Breakfast! It’s not all cereals and fruit but an entire buffet of hot and cold options. It has it’s staples which are out everyday and then the amazing kitchen staff will switch things up each morning with a new take on a breakfast dish. You get the fuel for the rest of your day at camp.
What is a skill or activity you learned at camp?
Waterskiing/Wakeboarding
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one musical album, what would you bring?
Jessie Ware – What’s Your Pleasure?
