Summertime may be over, but prep for next year is in full swing. No big offseason changes to report, but lots of small upgrades to share:
The fields have been aerated, fertilized, and seeded. After a hot, dry summer and lots of action, it’s great to see the fields looking so vibrant and lush! The same process will happen again in the spring, so expect the fields to look sharp come June!
The maintenance team has also been busy with campus-wide carpentry projects. They ripped out the beds in Lakeview, Sports Shed, and Pines and replaced them with our new models. These beds are exceptionally sturdy, high enough off the floor that trunks can easily fit underneath (which allows for more floor space), and provide significantly improved access to the top bunks (the ladders are far superior to the “step” system).
Additionally, Fusco and Adam built a new basketball shed. The new shed is much bigger and better designed – form and function as one! Let’s hope this helps boys remember to put their basketballs away at the end of the day!
Mike Clark, our tree expert, removed two trees along our shoreline – a red pine which was struck by lightning two years ago (and has been fading ever since) and a gnarly maple that had struggled in the red pine’s shadow. While we were sad to see these trees go, we are happy with the result – a much more open view! And, with the roots removed, more space for picnic tables.
We’ve also been out reviewing our trails and campsites. The Piermont trail is in great shape, and we have plans to re-design our campsite near the summit. The old tent sites tended to dry slowly (which was problematic on wet summers) – but we’ve identified new tent locations which are flat and dry, and which will allow campers to rise early and watch the sun rise over Moosilauke and the White Mountains from the summit, a truly special experience.
Finally, we’d like to leave you with a few recent pictures of camp. Fall foliage is nearing prime in the north woods and camp is looking gorgeous!
