They say that life begins at 40. The camp counterpart is that the real day commences after rest hour. Don’t get me wrong on this: Boys enjoy those morning clinics and they have had two good meals by 3 PM. However, a major distinction for Kingswood is that as the day wears on, boys increasingly get more free choice, i.e., they “vote with their feet.” The day, the weather, the choices, what friends are doing and what activities their favorite counselors are sponsoring can and do influence options. Here is a peek at some of yesterday’s picks.
The Kingswood Cayman golf course, 18 diabolical short pitch/chipping holes, was the scene of a tournament.Packerball is kickball only it is an “every man for himself” variation. I watched with amusement as Doug hit three home runs in succession. Do not imagine long blasts. Just the opposite: He evaded several attempts to get pegged and just kept circling the bases.If one can “catch the peg,” he gets to punt the ball into the woods. See the ball in flight at top left as Devin, middle in blue, caught two in a row? Laugh of the day!Eventually, everyone gets pegged!Meanwhile, just beyond the left field fence sits the basketball court, where another NBA skills competition was being held.More interesting than Charlie’s time was his footwear!Somewhere in the 16 second range were the best times.Floor hockey drew quite a few stick slappers to the tennis courts.And, despite threatening weather conditions, it was mild and muggy. Many boys showed up for water polo…and during B-Block general swim.After dinner there were many “sponsorships” offered by staff. Tim reviews the options.Come dusk, we all reassembled down by the lake for our third council fire session of the summer.Allow me to get a few more faces into these daily reports.Honestly, I do keep a “photo op” list, right here in front of my face as I make this report.It is sighting #3 for Nick and #4 for Connor.#5 for James and first-time for Tristan, who just arrived at camp.
