Director’s Report

“Good Camp”

“Good Camp”

July 14,2025

“Good Camp.” Here is another phrase that often finds its way into my reports. I do not employ these words to describe activity that simply is fun. To qualify, there has to be a deeper appreciation of some underlying value at play. Good sportsmanship, fine fellowship, sincere unselfishness or simply appropriate camp spirit are some of the attributes that earn the “good camp” moniker.

Last evening’s soccer match revealed all the above traits. There were almost no fouls called during the entire match and goals by one side were met with decent praise from the opposition.  Substitutions came on the fly and no one complained when sent to the sidelines.

We have some good camper players who figured they could give the counselors a run for their money. Boys, including staff, love challenges and the game was on. Klaus, of course, had his chair hauled over to the soccer field so he could announce (e.g. harass) both players and the large crowd that assembled at the pitch.

This old fellow had the temerity to drive his golf cart across the field, thus earning a swift rebuke from the master of ceremonies atop his perch.

Most importantly, however, was the terrific camp esprit de corps evidenced by the large throng of spectators. Yes, of course, there was another tailgate party beforehand and my long-range photos indicate that most of the camp eventually found their way to the event.

The counselors were older, stronger and faster, thus eventually prevailing. However, I carted myself back onto the field at the final horn to compliment camper goalie Billy L., who made some saves that would have graced any highlight reel. Oh yeah, the weekly inspection ice cream party followed the game and the crowd quickly dispersed. Not just “Good Camp” but “Great Camp.”

Other satisfying events occurred yesterday, too, and please take a peek at those sailing photos taken by Sara on a brisk, windy afternoon. Great framing, naturally, but I was pleased to see both motorboat skiffs nearby to oversee the action. As I am fond of remarking, boys think they are “free souls” in these circumstances, but not really. We are watching. Good camp, eh?
