Director’s Report

Gravy Days

Yesterday at camp meeting, Klaus cracked a very mild “inside” joke.  175 people spontaneously laughed.  That’s when you know the Gravy Days have arrived. Week Four should be amazing fun for all the boys.

It is supposed to rain quite a bit today starting around noon.  Nobody cares.  We’ve got loads of indoor models to choose from, most of which we have not done at all so far in this near-perfect-weather session.  Besides, we need the rain as the dusty conditions along the road have returned.  We did purchase a 30 gallon water tank that attaches to the camp tractor and it has been driven up and down the roadway many times.  This helps, but a steady downpour would be perfect; hope it happens.

Sara’s photos tell yesterday’s story quite well.  Of course, she hit a ten strike with her photos of the morning Lake Swim.  So many boys were attracted by the sight that we did a second Lake Swim after dinner.  Later in Sara’s report, you can see that I led more lake tours in the Ferrari boat, and we got to see the Lake Swim from close up.  Boys were extremely cooperative during these excursions, signaling to me that the tours are popular and that they don’t want to do anything to lose the privilege.

The afternoon was totally taken up by “California Beach Day” as just about everybody gathered down at the waterfront.  The lifeguarding was done by two separate shifts and I chuckled when the fellow finishing up his session jumped into the lake, then had to wait while his replacement lifeguard did the same thing.  Spanky placed some neat music for all to enjoy and the arts & crafts tent also had plenty of takers when those kids were not in the drink themselves.

We took advantage of the laid back schedule to get nearly 80 boys, in several waves, off to Moose Scoops for ice cream.  There are still more trips to go since so many of the campers were enrolled last autumn before the October 1 “early bird” deadline.  That deal continues this year.  Pay the deposit by October 1 and a) you get a tuition discount, b) we get the $$, and c) your son earns the 2023 trip to Moose Scoops.  Win/win/win, as we say.

Of course, all of this did nothing to prevent the weekly inspection ice cream party from taking place last evening.  GRAVY DAYS, or should that be ICE CREAM DAYS?
