A-Block is the time frame from 3 pm to 4:30 that goes just about every day. Sports practices, games with other camps, and various renditions of our “100 games” make up the bulk of the options for boys at this time. For sure, non-sportsy choices are available, too. Yesterday there was a hike up Black Mountain, an arts & crafts project and fishing certifications. A large percentage of boys, however, engaged in these “Kingswood staples,” pix of which follow below.
Some of our sports choices are traditional games like basketball.Teddy is thrilled with both the fresh paint job on the courts plus our new “forgiving” rims.The big guys played at one end…while the small fellows were entertained by Lucas at the other end of the court.Crosbee is perhaps our most popular self-invented game, featured in A-Block options for 30 years.Crosbee is much more than mere frisbee keep-away on the lacrosse goals…as one has to pass the disk or get a shot off before he is tagged…which results in fewer goals but much celebration upon success.Two games were needed due to the popularity of crosbee.
Another batch of boys were engaged in what surely appears to be a normal game of soccer…as this nice ground pass by Nicolas would seem to attest.But, wait a second. “Hands” violation, correct?In Gatorball, hands are legal so long as you are not tagged. Goals are often scored by tosses like this one.Remarked one boy of Gatorball, “This is more fun than real soccer.”
Ah yes, a simple game of kickball. Holy cow! How come so many runners on second base?Our creative counselors have devised numerous variations on games like this one…to make this game a hilarious outing for all involved.Kudos to Joe for his clever bunt single!Everywhere I looked, boys were having fun and, more importantly, being cooperative, good sports. Great first A-Block!
