Director’s Report

Kingswood Original Games

The weather continues to be bright and sunny.  Lots of trips went out yesterday and the afternoon A Block choices were gobbled up by the mere 80 or so souls on the grounds.  As per usual, there was something to sooth everyone’s pallet, but Sara and I both fell upon some of the original Kingswood games, hence today’s title.

We call ourselves “The Camp of 100 Games,” and we have at least that many in our activities file.  Spanky invented a game called “Catch 22,” which is football on the lacrosse goals.  “Line up by height,” hollered Spanky — with three squads quickly selected by this lone criteria.  We never pick teams from best to worst and no boy’s feelings ever get hurt.

Crosbee was the frisbee-lacrosse game on Mem Field, and probably is our most popular invention.  I was doing some brushwork (my favorite form of summer exercise) nearby and heard Noah’s name shouted out dozens of times.  There he is in Sara’s photo album of yesterday’s date, as well as some neat crosbee close-ups.

After dinner, there were many staff sponsorships, including more camp originals.  J-ball is my proposal for an Olympic Medal contest and there I am in the last pic of my album trying for a tennis ball home run.  A couple of feeble ground balls to short ended my dream of a baseball comeback at age 68, but the sweet boys cheered me on anyways.  Great kids, we have here.

As I said at the outset, it is gorgeous today and I am happy for the two overnights on the Mahoosuc range and Canon mountain, both of whom complete their journeys today and should be back at camp by dinner time.  We are playing all-campus hide-and-seek this evening, with the campers doing all the hiding and counselors the finding.  There is a buzz about the grounds as we forge ahead with what has been a terrific first session.
