“Let’s keep playing”

Yesterday we had a Deep Clean morning and today we are making another effort to get the joint operating on a par with late June. That is asking quite a bit as the grassy areas are brown in many parts due to both heavy usage and a lack of rain. Not to forget that incessant lost and found issue we have with boys contributes to the mess.

We thought there were some storms coming our way last evening. I did not crop out the dark clouds that hovered over the junior short-side soccer game on what we call Tramp Field, named for what used to be the main attraction of this space.

Old Kingswood hands knew better as those ugly skies were to the north and east of us, meaning we surely would get passed over. Yup.

If you are new to Kingswood, you might get a sense from the photos that something new is in the air. Bow and Arrow color war has commenced. This event will transpire just like the 41 other competitions in our tenure – with gusto, great energy, heroic gestures and tons, and I mean TONS, of good sportsmanship.

Why? Because we say so. Dwell on that testimony for a few seconds. Not only are we blessed with well-seasoned counselors, Kingswood also has legions of campers who have been B&A participants in previous summers. We can count on these campers as much as the staff and I write this sentence with complete confidence.

Sara wants you to know that a flood of photos will be posted later today as she needs time to process and edit her selections. I can tell you before seeing her album that the team introductions – skits put on by the coaches –will be among her early photos and the majority will feature the initial contests, which for the younger boys was a track meet and for the older ones a boat meet.

Things can go awry in boat meets especially but no one will be labeled a goat if he messes up.

I followed two of the evening competitions and you can see my pix now. See those dark skies? Nah! Actually, the winds picked up and the temps fell, leading me to wander over to the council fire where the fire-building contest was being held. Everything was under control and the Bow fire severed the rope first despite the breeze blowing the flames in all directions!

The Arrows had the better team at the soccer pitch. Interestingly, the rules called for five 10-minute games with three wins earning the B&A points. The Arrows won three in succession, thus ending the game. But referee Stephen, seeing on how much fun the boys were having, hollered “You guys want to keep playing?” The screeches in favor nearly pierced my ears.
