“Only at Kingswood”
July 31, 2024
Only at Kingswood, or most likely so, can one find so many activities that are either homespun or offered by the sheer utility of their popularity. Lest this latter category confuse you, please know that innertube rides go out in just about any condition and that sandcastle building has been an ongoing endeavor from the get-go. I am tempted to open “Camp Dunes” along the North Carolina beach (inside joke) next summer. Check Sara’s pix for yesterday’s renditions.
While you are referencing Sara’s album, note that the boys swinging tennis rackets at the baseball backstop are playing Javelin Ball — baseball with tennis gear – a very fast-paced Kingswood original. There is so much action to J-ball that this baseball lover endorses it as an Olympic sport.
Sam offered “Block Frisbee” for A-Block and I had to shake my head at the billion or so flying disk adaptations we have here. “Offer it and they will come,” is a standard program prognostication.
Now turn to my photo album of today’s date. I think it is fair to surmise that not too many other camps offer fishing rod casting clinics on the Frisbee golf course. And, especially amongst the trees, where how could anything go wrong?
I had the pleasure of driving a group of day hikers over to Webster Slide Mountain and got a few of my “hiker trading card” poses before shoving off. Mike drove the second vehicle and we took a short diversion to check the water flows of the Baker River. You can see for yourself why we scratched that trip from the afternoon plan.
My very next photo shows Alex and Estelle who have done terrific work as the Kingswood landscaping team. Everyone who visits comments on how beautiful our campus looks and these two merit tons of appreciation.
“Only at Kingswood” does there exist a game called “Lutherball.” The brainstorm of Andy Luther, shown on the dock, this game calls for a person to jump off the tower, snag a tennis ball out of the air, and toss it through the small ring buoy on the crossover dock section.
No one has ever accomplished this feat but that is why they come. Henry Hale, the tallest guy in the photo series, hit it last year and he had a few good tosses again last evening.
And, “Only at Kingswood” does an American Bald Eagle swoop down for a look at the Lutherball action!
Lastly, very likely, “Only at Kingswood” can a guy convene a council fire session by asking the audience to be completely still and stare into the embers, only to be serenaded at that precise moment by the loons doing their singing out on the lake.
