Orange Peels

July 23, 2026

To pick up where I left off yesterday, messes are condoned here at Kingswood so long as they are picked up. I just now went into the kitchen to put the kibosh on oranges as take-out from the dining room. We all bite off peels but it is expected they go into a trash can and not on the ground. Orange peels are not Clean Mirth.

Indeed we are enjoying those gravy days but the warning flags are up everywhere to avoid what we call “the loosening effect,” that casual approach to things that leads to sloth, or at least to making a lesser effort than before.

Honestly, I think we are doing swell at keeping to the plan of being a thoroughly wholesome community, at all times and without exception. If the only gripe I can think of is orange peels scattered inappropriately then we must be sticking to our guns rather effectively.

I guess there might be a second complaint as you can see a photo of the tetherballs tied high on the poles, a sure sign that the counselors expect the boys to be inside the cabins getting ready for inspection. Likewise, tetherball restrictions often are enforced in the evening time when boys should be brushing their teeth.

One thing to notice about inspection time is the presence of our female staff. I hear again and again how helpful they are at just those times of day when the campers require loads of personal attention. Call it “mothering” if you must, but having female staff to me is one of the best decisions made by the second generation of Wipfler directorship of Kingswood.

The camp pays the Plymouth laundry service by the pound; I could protest but do not since we want the boys to wear clean clothing. And, especially in week 4, the last of session one, we want them to go home with a clean truck. This won’t happen in totality, of course, but at least we can try.

Last evening we held the first session egg drop behind the CIT Barn. The event is not at all a drop but a smash as Sam and his gang of misfits conspire to destroy every cabin contraption. Mr. Weird was on hand, as always, and this time he was suffering from some bad gas due to eating too many beans.

And, yes, they cleaned up the mess afterwards.

For those visiting tomorrow and Saturday, please check out those tables of lost & found, and don’t forget items on the clothesline, laundry bags and gear stored elsewhere in the bunk. Plus, while you are at it, pick up any orange peels.
