Potpourri
July 26, 2025
Or, “Making a Living,” are your two title choices for today’s blog.
Several photos need some explanation and hence the term “Potpourri,” one that I have used in the past, but for this first time this summer.
My current album: I could not resist following my granddaughters to their boxing clinic and offered several shots of their experience, perhaps to be used in a school report on what they did with their summers. “I boxed at a boys’ camp,” would stop some folks short.
“This what I do” was my prime thought as I bolted up to Matball after dinner last evening, fearful of missing a single pitch. The wind had shifted to the north and I was quite cold but could not take my eyes off the action. Very simply, any kicker who makes it safely to first base can continue to run the bases until put out. I heard Rob Wiff say “Thanks Ryan” when this counselor defender deliberately threw the ball quite off line, thus allowing for many advances. Absolutely hilarious to watch reports this 78 year-old, going on 12, perhaps.
Week 5 counselor photos: Intermediate-aged campers got to go on the hangout junket with the girls from Camp Wa-klo at Winslow State Park, about midways between the two camps. Afterwards, lots of green Wa-Klo tee shirts were being strutted out on our grounds and one can only imagine the curtseys at their place by white Kingswood tee shirt bearers.
I also thought the A-Block shelter-building photos were a good example of boys having both a learning experience and a good time out in the woods. The pottery clinic goes on down at Robin’s house just down the street from Kingswood. We have a steadily growing porcelain collection of animals scattered about the camp property.
Your guess is as good as mine regarding the war canoe maneuvers on dry land. Reenactment of Washington crossing the Delaware maybe?
Belle Island photos: Belle Island is located on Newfound Lake a tad to the south of us. I am guessing a low fish catch but an enormously high enjoyment time for that gang.
July 25 by Sara: My only gripe with Trash Ball is the purloining of trash barrels meant for some place else. But, the fellows have been pretty good at returning them.
The flag-football tournament is in full swing. Boys love those colorful Kingswood shirts, which are reversible, with a dark and a light side. The elimination rounds don’t start until late next week. Get it?
Yes, we had a 20 minute monsoon yesterday and, of course, boys will play tetherball in the puddles.
Sawyer River: That’s what we call this portion of the Baker River. Don’t ask why. It’s a great place for simple exploration and shallow swimming. We go here when Big Eddy is too crowded.
Southern Presidentials: For experienced Varsity Club members only, this trip was the reward for those intrepid souls who had hiked in gales and maybe even near-blizzards to earn their stripes. They got to overnight at the Appalachian Mountain Club hut at Mizpah where I am told they enjoyed enchiladas for dinner. Huzzahs!
