No question but that schedule flexibility is our strong suit. As I write these words, 40+ boys have headed into the hills to get in a day hike before the afternoon/evening deluge arrives.
Yesterday, Mike observed the approaching band of showers and simply flipped A Block and B Block. While that won’t translate into much for most of our readers, it did mean that we had indoor activities during the rainy period and outdoor action once the showers passed. Most of the photos that follow tell the story of our wonderful creative abilities during the inclement weather.
By 6PM, the skies had totally cleared and we enjoyed the initial picnic supper of the summer. Bill’s smoked chicken was delicious! Our intrepid waterfront director would spend the entire summer in his BBQ pit were I allow to him the privilege.
Later, we took full advantage of the calm conditions to orchestrate the first council fire of the summer. I cannot think of a faster and more effective way to pull kids into the orbit of Kingswood than with the sharing of a few stories, songs, and other camp traditions by the fireside.
The last photo of some younger boys sitting around the dying embers of the fire identifies the gang who conducted an overnight tent camp out on the dry end of the soccer field. They had the last remnants of the fire all to themselves and toasted marshmallows before the long hike back up the hill to the field tent site. OK, so you, as I, chuckle at this thought. But, trust me when I tell you the camp out could have been on Mt. Everest for all the little boys knew or cared about. To them, it was quite the adventure.
