Some local residents deny that there is such a thing as spring in New Hampshire. The argument goes that winter becomes summer in a matter of a few days. Alice and I visited camp late last week and found both winter and spring dueling it out for supremacy. Below are some photos I took and my “take” on what is all means as we look forward to real summer, coming in just over one month!
Winter: We used the winter months to re-design the cabins for the youngest campers. Pull out drawers for clothing will make it a lot easier for the little guys to take care of their gear. Bubbler Cabin and Hilly 1 got this new treatment.
New LED lighting in several of the cabins promises to be a major improvement. We will get to all cabins, eventually.
Winter: New England had a relatively light snow season last winter and we took advantage to dig some needed drainage ditches.
The stone-covered drain is supposed to divert rain water into the woods instead of swamping the junior cabin area. It will be interesting to see how well this works when we have our first gully-washer of the summer.
Winter: Docks and floats are stored in the staff parking lot, which also was expanded to about double its former size.
In this high-tech world, we have found that a simple strong plastic cover does a marvelous job of protecting power boats over the long winter months.
Spring: This tiny green electrical box reveals an enormous change to the area we call “Bubbler Bench.”
So, where are the overhead wires that went from the Bubbler Bench telephone pole to the cabins and down the hill?
Gone. Buried forever and the view now is even more breathtaking than before.
During our five day visit, the weather was mixed. Spring surely was in the air when I took this stroll across Pines Field…
and across the freshly mowed (first time) soccer field.
But, a cool weather front passed through, delivering gorgeous autumn-like colors…
and, on our last night, deposited new snow atop Moosilauke. Look carefully at the north summit, far distant left.
Spring: The most obvious thing happening is the addition Dan is building onto Kiln Cabin.
Here is a peek inside the front door — taken before he ripped off the old roof.
Said Dan, as he popped up from the new roof line, “I can’t see my shadow so I guess that winter is nearly over.”
What a gorgeous setting we are blessed with. Hope Dan is right!
This is NOT camp… It’s a RESORT for Happy Campers 🙂
