Take Me Out to the Ballgame
August 1, 2023
I enjoy Intramural games a whole lot. Alice wanted me to help her run some important camp errands, but I demurred, arguing that the juniors were having an Oldtimers All Star baseball game on the Little League field. I got maybe 100 laughs watching this event. I garnered videos of the National Anthem as well as the Seventh Inning Stretch before the bottom of the Fourth!
In addition, Spanky had a musical playlist of every one of those ballpark organ riffs that we have all heard many times. To the boys, it simply HAD to feel a bit like the real thing. Counselors Skyler, Haiden and Christian also did a good job of doing the pitching/catching, keeping the game moving, and varying the pitch velocities to meet a proper pace for each batter. Pix of the game dominate my album for the day, and Sara was there, too.
Speaking of intramurals, that is an IM sailing regatta in my photo set and a “USA vs the World” soccer match in Sara’s batch. Team USA prevailed this time, I am sorry to report, as the World is often undermanned and I usually pull for them.
Yesterday was Dante E’s 8th birthday and the Birthday Tsar’s put on a very funny bit to celebrate the lad’s big day, which left only a single camper still in the 7 year old category. I’ll spare you the details of the skit, but know that counselor Swamy took several glasses of “boiling water” to the face and body and Dante won ten seconds of uninterrupted “screen time.” Check the photos.
While you are at it, keep scanning until you find the evening sponsorships board. No wonder that every day here at Kingswood is a crescendo, with much of the best saved for last. Just like with the baseball game earlier, I simply had to watch a bit of Officer Mark Skidd’s radar gun offering. Most tosses were baseball pitches or lacrosse shots and a lot of good fellowship ensued.
I fell into “Relaxed Newcomb” on the volleyball court but I have no idea where that large blue ball came from. It was a very pretty evening, too, and both Sara and I captured some of the interesting colors. We never tire of the view towards Mt. Moosilauke in the distance across the lake.
Today promises to be sunny and 75 degrees with low humidity. Accordingly, some good hikes are going out. The “Varsity” level trek is headed off to the rugged Carter Range to the east of Mt. Washington. This is a legitimate road trip, while the “intramural” hike is to nearby Webster Mountain and Mt. Mist. This one goes along the Appalachian Trail for several miles and we’ll be picking up the group this afternoon just 1.7 miles south of camp where the AT intersects Route 25C.
Photos of this and more in tomorrow’s posts. Enjoy the day.
