Taking a Break?

My idea of taking a break is sleeping  in or reading a good book. Not boys. They are at it practically non-stop, as you are well aware.

The “break” of course, is in the B&A competition. No contests Monday through Wednesday provides the campers a relatively normal third week of the session. Please know that it takes several years to accomplish most activities Kingswood offers and we make no apologies for stretching things out in this fashion. “When are we doing Haunted House Night,” or “Why is it that Find the Counselor is not happening?” Answer: Not enough time.

Every day is unique, however, and that is the lure of camp.

I don’t think we have done broom toss in a while but there it appeared in the afternoon set of choices billed as “Beat the Counselor” or “Records Day.” Boys were free to wander from station to station to face the challenge presented. By the way, the camp record for broom toss is minus twenty feet, as one lad spun himself into such a tizzy he threw the broom backwards!

Rob Horne had out his police radar gun, which comes in very handy for many camp gigs, this time measuring the speed of, well, just about everything but light itself.

I was a witness to the action off the dive tower, taking it all in at lake level while doing my aqua-jogging workout. Boys were timing jumps to kick a soccer ball towards a large goal on the far dock or tossing tennis balls at a ring buoy the size of your hand. I did not see a single “hit,” a fact registering not a whit on any lad.

I jumped in, photographically, after dinner when the Bows and Arrows flipped venues, one getting ice cream while the other had practice for the upcoming Songfest on Thursday evening. Then vice versa. Did this old geezer get ice cream twice?

A couple of hikes are getting organized at the current moment. I enjoy reviewing the routes these excursions will follow, and I was eating it up when Scott and Morgan listed their reasons for preferring one trail over another on a tiny bump of a hill that overlooks Squam Lake.

They have been everywhere in the White Mountains, so very much to Kingswood’s benefit.

The Week 6 Counselor photos album has been finalized. One quick story: Kingswood was having an easy time of it in Ultimate Frisbee versus Camp Moose. At some point, our counselors joined Moose’s team, evening things out to the point where everyone agreed was the best game in quite some time. Check the photo.
