RIGHT NOW

I just took a bunch of photos at breakfast, just a little while ago, and immediately posted them, without any editing.  Daughter Sara would never contemplate such a brazen move. We want you to get an occasional look at what is going on live, as in live television. Boys may not be smiling; in fact, they may be frowning. This means absolutely nothing. In any blink, this could happen.

Do not call camp to say your son is unhappy.  That’s the rule for RIGHT NOW photo posts. Actually, it’s the rule for any picture album. If your son is struggling in any fashion, we will let you know when we think the time is right. End of lecture.

“THAT MAKES TWO OF US”

One old-time camper came up to me yesterday offering a big hug over our 10m month separation. When he asked me about what I had done all that time, I simply informed him that I sat around waiting for summer to return. “That makes two of us,” he announced. Another lad shouted across the field to me “I’ve waited all year for this.”

Indeed, many boys love camp and I will spend the next seven weeks in explanation to you as to why this happens.

One hint: A visiting parent yesterday upon learning of a counselor’s college courses remarked something to the effect of how he could use his degree to help improve the Kingswood facility. “I would not change anything,” was his polite response.

Look, not every boy is already aboard the loving camp bandwagon. That takes time, sometimes as long as 21 days. For 42 years, this number has held up. 99% of the campers will have to admit that camp was all right, after all. Even the boy who long ago wrote home, “Dear mom and dad, thanks for sending me to Alcatraz” eventually climbed on board.

Yesterday was hot and today promises more of the same. There were cool breezes to be had down on the waterfront, however, and we will deal with whatever conditions we get. I did run up two large vats of sunscreen to the basketball and tennis courts, which always get the most direct afternoon sunlight. Everyone talks about the importance of sustaining that lather.

I’ll get around to explaining how each typical day of camp works, perhaps beginning with tomorrow’s post. Sara and I already have posted photos, so I suggest you go there to get your first taste of camp life.
