Trash baggin’ it
July 29, 2026
The blog title comes straight from the sponsorship board of last evening. More on this momentarily.
Conditions were getting too dry for my liking. Breathing dust is no fun, not to mention that my theory has it that sore throats and general malaise are generated by such a sustained environment. So, yes, this fellow spent some time yesterday afternoon studying the weather radar in hopes of some soaking rain. We got it!
I’ll bet some of you were eyeballing the New Hampshire radar reports, too, feeling bad for your sons when the storms arrived. But, they were not really storms so much as steady and gentle showers. Oh, but the poor children are getting soaked, you might contend. Rubbish. The boys loved it.
First, we got in the full A/B Block time frames. Mike and the program folks simply postponed rest hour until 4:30, which allowed a hike and several games with neighboring camps to go forward as scheduled.
Then it poured and rest hour ensued, only to be cut short by the announcement for everyone to gather in the great room of the Main Lodge for council fire and some musical entertainment. I cannot vouch for my camp history lesson, but those songs were fantastic. I have never heard more cheering for a performance than when ten-year-old Calvin sang a song of his own creation. Professional quality! (Week 5 counselor photos – boy in yellow shirt)
That got us to dinner, with everybody happy with the day so far. “Load up the sponsorship board” the directors bellowed, meaning that the rains were over and the heck with getting muddy or messing up the fields. Mandatory hot showers for the participants did not frighten off too many boys.
Sponsorships are nothing more than activities the counselors want to do, which usually means they get to participate as well as the boys. More often than not, evenings are everyone’s favorite time of day.
Fast forward to breakfast today when I asked some boys to name the most fun they have had so far. “Trash baggin’ it” won that poll fairly handily! I got a huge chuckle of the soap-laden urchins barreling down the hill and intruding on the small-side soccer game.
As you can see from my photos just posted, two throngs of boys were basically occupying the same space. I witnessed no objections from either gang as “mutual respect” simply is the way Kingswood often works and everybody seems fine with it.
Sara’s photo album is sensational and trumps any of my words for your fly-on-the-wall amusement.
A “Good Camp” day. We think we’ll execute the morning clinics without weather hassle but maybe bracing for more rain later on today. No one cares. Are you with me on this?
