“Waiting, Not For Long” in this case as Sara, my daughter and professional photographer, delivered 172 photos from yesterday for your enjoyment this morning. That is a record number for her, as she labors over her pictures until she has them edited to perfection. That is often, in my judgment. See for yourself.
You got 52 pix from me, much more slapdash, as I tend to pan-back to show the setting. Sara gets not only those still poses but marvelous shots of arms and legs flailing in all directions while capturing the facial expressions, too. There ought to be a national camp photo competition!
A quick factual explanation of the staff is a good place to start this blog, which, by the way, will appear every day from now on: Add up the total number of Kingswood staff summers and it comes to 1025 including camper years. Nathan did this math and tells us that the median staff Kingswood experience comes to 6+ summers, with 9 years being the average. Wow!
It was a long wait for all those cars to get here yesterday but it never seemed congested thanks to families picking various time slots for arriving. The nurses set up shop at the picnic table in front of the infirmary and screened boys as they came on the grounds.
By lunch time, we had a huge crowd and Mike Wiff, head program guy, fashioned the afternoon agenda announced at the meal and posted on the back of Bubbler cabin, residence of the youngest campers and geographically the center of camp.
It was a gorgeous day and boys flocked down to the waterfront to take swim proficiency tests. I do not like the word “test,” preferring the adjective prior. The lifeguards simply need to know who the weak swimmers are – it is that simple, really.
At 4:45 we met as a full camp in the council fire area down by the lake. All manner of introductions (most of them humorous in nature) and announcements (more serious) took place. The most significant was the time spent explaining how morning clinics work and boys got to mark their ballots in selecting their choices. After dinner, those super-important cabin meetings were held. Those experienced counselors know that by being friendly but firm at the start they can create sustained cohesion in the bunk community.
Just now at breakfast, Klaus the assistant director remarked that most of the orientation is behind us and we can hope for a relatively normal day today.
