Run With It

The lower campus looked like a ghost town yesterday afternoon during A Block.  Two day hikes were out – Mount Moosilauke and Mount Tecumseh; the U-12 basketball team was on the road for the Baker Valley Tournament (which they won handily;) The U-12 baseball team was playing a “friendly” game with Camp Moosilauke at our stadium located at the far southern end of the property; and loads of boys were out on the lake in various craft as it was another sparkler of a day here in the north woods.

“I’ve got to run with it,” allowed program manager Mike Wiff, suggesting that with weather so good it would be a crime to save anything for later that could go on right now.  We had some visitors who wanted to see camp in action and the best we could tell them was that we were scattered in many different directions.

My photo album alone (you can find all of them on your CampinTouch account under photos) reveals the diversity of activity choices ON CAMPUS.  Tie-die shirts were being produced up at the A&C tent and I got a kick out of an impromptu guitar/drum jam by Rory and Julius at that same venue.

At lunch, Mike Wiff had urged boys to “listen to their bodies” and take some breaks in the fast-action stuff from time to time during the day.  That one photo of five campers watching the baseball game from the “cheap seats” past the left field fence illustrates the point.  So, too, do those pictures of boys reading during B Block.  “All good,” as one would say.

Naturally, and just fine, many youngsters elected not to heed Mike’s advice.  The first overnight hike of the summer was getting organized during B- Block.  This one was to Pirate Cove on the other side of Mother Tarleton from Kingswood.

Smartly, the overnight did not depart until after dinner and returned in time for breakfast this morning.  We’ve learned from experience that one does not need to venture far from the nest to have amazing adventures and these lads came home full of good cheer for a time well had.

Just now at the Council Fire post-breakfast meeting, Mike announced another day quite heavy with options.  It is going to be hot by our standards and most likely heavenly by yours, as temps will rise to the high 80’s later today.  Anglers will be heading off to our favorite off-lake fishing haunt known as Indian Pond.  They will eat dinner (sandwiches, no doubt) in their canoes while casting for pickerel l and small mouth bass.

I’ll be leading senior campers to one of our nearby swimming holes where boys can jump off specified rocks and slide down chutes in the very cool waters of the Baker River.  Just another “run with it” day here in Paradise.
