I learned a good lesson many years ago when, having run a really good activity for the full camp, I allowed myself to relax and soak in the positive vibes. Suddenly, I was clobbered with the realization that I had no answer whatsoever to the question “What’s next?”
As parents you know exactly what that feels like, so I was so relieved to wake up this morning to the sight of Mike Wiff standing on the beach as 17 lads had already pushed off on the Lake Swim quest. They were shrouded in the fog, as you can see from the photo set I just now published under the title of Right Now III.
Sara hooked on with the lifeguard boat and will have a big photo album to add later today. She told me to inform you that she also has zillions of pix from yesterday as well to “edit,” and urges you to be patient with her professional inklings.
I confess to having gotten caught up in all the brouhaha, a favorite word of mine that defines as “a noisy and overexcited reaction,” and therefore the perfect vocabulary choice for yesterday’s activities. I did not return to add any additional text to the daily report. When we did call for a slight reprieve (aka rest hour) this guy fell sound asleep in his lounge chair.
Anyway, it was such a nice summery day that general swim for B Block was received with as much enthusiasm as the pie eating contest and other mayhem offered beforehand. Honestly, this staple of camp was my personal favorite moment of the day. “Next?” goes out the window when kids are romping about in the lake as a carefree atmosphere dominates the proceedings.
After dinner, we were back to the zany antics with Paul Revere’s Wild Races on Mem Field (ridiculous) followed by a short concert at Theater in the Pines (sublime) to conclude the celebration. I am not going to endeavor to explain in full the former; suffice it to say that 4 relay races were run while our British staff tried mightily to interfere. Every cabin got to place a “ticket,” as per horse racing, and prizes were awarded to those who picked 2, 3 or 4 winners. The campers from Hilly 1 (youngest boys) got all 4 correct and will be heading off to Moose Scoops to celebrate their outstanding handicapping accomplishment!
Today promises to be a scorcher and a mountain hike has already commenced on Mt. Osceola in an effort to get the uphill portion out of the way before it gets too hot. Osceola is a gentle ascent mostly in the woods, so that helps, too.
Tonight we will have the fireworks as part of the council fire gathering, a satisfying prospect that pretty much takes care of “Next?” for this day.
