An Almost Perfect Heat Wave

July 2, 2026

Indeed it gets warm around here, too, as we are located in that eastern zone getting all the emergency headlines about staying indoors. Yesterday we elected not to comply until we were driven to it by a round of evening showers that abruptly hit us just after dark. I had brazenly predicted the rain would pass to our north, but it filled in and we got clipped.

Many boys were in the Great Room watching World Cup, which we paused at half time to enable all of them to get to their cabins easily and without incident. We taped the second half and might show it today.

Soon into the downpour it became a certainty that the campers and counselors who were overnighting at Pirates’ Cove (across the lake) were getting clobbered. Mike Wiff reported that about ten counselors and several camp boating craft launched a repatriation mission to bring the soaking entourage back to camp. “Sara’s final three pix show boys getting ready to shove off! “Scary but cool,” responded one lad just now at breakfast. Please don’t balk at this, a lifetime experience for those kids.

Minus that blip, it was a perfect heat wave day here at Kingswood. Our notion of sizzling temperatures surely does not match yours since at this place high eighties with a steady breeze from the north make for reasonably comfortable conditions. After dinner, especially, it felt like “no temperature” at all. Most of my album pictures from yesterday were taken at that time.

Earlier in day, at the apex of the heat (3 pm) Sara accompanied the group heading south on the lake to the very end, a place called White Sands. For whatever reason, the bottom there is smooth, sandy and not deep. White Sands is a great place for – well, just check Sara’s album of yesterday’s date. She often picks her “event of the day” and focuses on getting good close ups of the campers.

Sara does not keep records of which lads are featured but is so ubiquitous that eventually she photos all of them. She got back from White Sands in time for general swim and there again found many arms and legs flailing about – her specialty angle.

After dinner I was drawn to the first round of the ever-popular flag football tournament. Four junior division games were played and boys got to wear those neat Kingswood shirts. They are reversible with a white side and dark side. Both number 8’s (in white, brothers  and not on the same team) made interceptions while I was observing.

Lastly, in my album you can witness several of the bulletin boards located in the breezeway under the dining room. We call it Buzz City. Many more references to this entertaining site are upcoming, to be certain.

I liked Inspector Pipes’ “shoe uniformity” demerit reference on his yellow sheet.

“Sock by steps” – Perfect!
