“Suppertime and the living is easy”

I decided on today’s blog title before Sara put up six photo albums, each with a specific theme. Let me explain:
Hot days always include swimming trips to nearby waterholes. Our boys would never be allowed to dive off that rusty bridge, but locals do it all the time, likely for our entertainment. The best thing about these afternoon treks is that they get back to camp in time for general swim, and even more time in the drink.
OK, best I get to the main story now. Sparklers and Kingswood wheels indicate something is up in the hiking department. About twenty-five years ago, hiking seemed to be on the wane so we established a Kingswood Varsity Club as a lure for the boys as well as a record-keeping device for all mountaineers.
I count seventy-two mountains on the attractive wheel we designed, all of them in the state of New Hampshire. Many are relatively inaccessible and all are challenging. 72 peaks in total, this is a task years in the doing.
The hiking tandem of Scott and Morgan Morneault, upon setting foot on the summit of Smarts Mountain yesterday, achieved a “life’s accomplishment,” acknowledged Rob Wiff at council fire last night. Hearty congratulations to Scott and Morgan.
Best yet, and both agree, is that their enthusiasm for the hiking trails rubs off on the campers as we have initiated more boys into the first rung (Piermont level) of Varsity Club this summer than ever before. Those kids who joined the celebration with apple cider and sparklers will never forget this day.
From Week 6 Counselor photos, you can see the watercolor painting clinic held at Robin’s house just down the road from camp. The Lake Tarleton Inn sat on this very site until the 1970’s. It owned almost all the land around the lake, and that explains why there is no development whatsoever on Mother T. It all is in easement with the federal government.
This incredibly lucky development explains why we are able to canoe over to Pirates’ Cove just about any time we please. Nice pix of boys in the trees while sunset happened about the area certainly got my attention.
Locals will tell you that Lake Tarleton is as good a fishing lake as any of them, but we like to take road trips to nearby spots that enjoy similar reputations. From the Belle Island and Connecticut River albums, you can see some of the catches.
Finally, we get to my photo album of August 7. Long-time veterans Bill and Minch descended on the grounds mid-week and promised a griller’s delight to everyone here for Friday’s outdoor picnic supper. They took several cleansing dips into the lake during their long smoking day. Thanks, lads.
In conclusion, for so many folks, both young and old, being here at Kingswood makes for some easy living.
