Director’s Report

Camp Gray Skies

When I was a youngster at camp, we sang songs at meals, orchestrated by the wife of the Head Counselor. We could not resist changing the words to many of the songs, much to her dislike.  One song had the phrase “nobody like us,” which, naturally, we rendered as “nobody likes us.”
“Blue skies, smiling at me…” became “Gray skies “ and I forget what.

I thought of those gray skies when observing the photo selections from yesterday put up by Sara and me. Every one of them has a dark tonal quality.  That’s the bad news and all of it.  Remarkably, for the second day in a row, we managed a full day at camp with but a single cancellation – a basketball tournament to be held at Camp Moose which had to be rescheduled. Those games will be played, I assure you, as all of the camps look forward to the good, wholesome competition traditions we have polished over the years.

The Kingswood program guys got it perfectly yesterday after lunch when they called for a delay to rest hour since there was merely a light mist going on. I headed up to observe my favorite activity, a game we call J Ball, which is baseball with tennis ball and racquet. It drives me nuts to see the kids run the bases backwards in this camp staple, but a soft toss of the tennis ball and a wide tennis racquet guarantees a hard hit ball put into play on nearly every pitch.  Honestly, I observed more interesting baseball situations in 30 minutes of J Ball than you would ever see in a little league hard ball game.

The second half of Sara’s photo selections show both J Ball and Dodgeball going great guns despite the weather conditions. So, too, did she nail some decent shots of waterfront activities afterwards.

Because it was only raining lightly, we morphed directly into what we call B Block at about 3 PM instead of the usual time of 4:30. Great call, as at just about at 4:30 the heavens opened up and everyone bolted back to the cabins for Rest Hour and thus nothing got cancelled. The soccer team got back to camp well into the rainy conditions and reported having played a great game with Camp Pemi in near monsoon conditions. Boys like this stuff, eh?

After dinner sponsorships (activities the counselors want to do with campers invited to join in) simply avoided slick spots such as the basketball and tennis courts with indoor options receiving the most play.  Board games, Mafia (a group detective game) were among those offered. The day ended with everyone gathering in the Great Room (Main Lodge) for some musical entertainment and other camp announcements.

Gray skies notwithstanding, they were smiling on us.  Talk to you tomorrow.
