Double A Block

July 8, 2026

NOTE: I just posted a “Right Now” set of pix. Will explain below.

The schedule-makers were on a roll yesterday afternoon. There were two A Block sessions. Normally A Block goes for an entire 1 ½ hours and is followed by B Block.

However, there were three trips off the property plus some other shenanigans going on, cutting into both camper numbers and supervision ratios. Accordingly, each cabin group was assigned to two 45 minute competitions pitting themselves versus another bunk. I thought the idea was not only typical of Kingswood’s ability to adjust on the fly, but actually quite good!

Check out Sara’s exceptional photos first. I cannot spell it but toochball (phonetically) is that rebound game where counterintuition sometimes is needed to score points. Boys can get hooked on this very fast-paced encounter.

A Connect Four relay race? Only at Kingswood.

Further along you see some shots on another net, this game being Gatorball. This one is a play on soccer, for which boys seem not to get enough of. My pix show some Gatorball on a larger net. The rules allow for scoring by hand, as well as by foot and head with 1, 2 and 3 point values. Lots of boys were attempting headers when I was watching, and yes Gatorball is another game that has Olympic promise.

I’ve been arguing for years that J-ball, baseball with a tennis ball and racquet, belongs in the upper echelon of American games. Robbie R, in today’s Featured Photo, acknowledged that this was the best activity of the summer so far. I awarded an extra scoop of ice cream to three boys who performed as challenged by yours truly!

Finally the general swim hour arrived and I got a laugh when Leo drew a bad number in the skiing/tubing lottery only to hear the buddy board counselor declare a “misdeal” of sorts due to a technical glitch. Leo liked the second iteration better!

After dinner there was more soccer, naturally, plus some entertaining variety to include games like Frisbee golf, pickleball and basketball. The latter included a rules amendment that forbade both running and jumping. They had fun playing slow-motion hoops, but I don’t think this one is destined for international renoun.

Closure at the Theater-in-the-Pines included some wickedly good music and announcements pertaining to the morrow – now being today.  Mike got all the sign-ups and spotters for the Lake Swim, which started well before the reveille call at 7:30 this morning.

The lake was calm and foggy at that early hour, but soon the fog began to lift and a breeze picked up. No matter. All went according to plan and another camp tradition has been realized. There will be more Lake Swims as interest merits.
