Director’s Report

Play, Eat, Play More

Yesterday’s pace was frenetic, thus all the better that today is dubbed “Slacker Day.” Not so, as I told you before, but the boys are planning on having a full day of assorted activity choices, many of which are designed to step off the gas just a trifle.  We meet in the Council Circle at 10:15 to make plans.  We’ll see how many lads choose to sit on their fannys all day long.  Not many, I would surmise.

OK, so yesterday we drummed up a whole bunch of activities, including hikes to Mt. Washington (“Love the hike, hate the summit — too many tourists”) and the gorgeous day hike to Mt. Lafayette (“the best views ever.”)

Here at home, we featured an old-timers baseball game, with counselors pitching (at various speeds) to both campers on one team and to themselves on the other.  I directed both squads and was happy that the game ended on a home run over the center field fence by Hartel the counselor off Alex the counselor.  (True disclosure — Alex had crossed up the batter with two curve balls, so I signaled him to throw a fast ball to Hartel catch him off guard, resulting in both the homer and the end of my dreams of one day managing the Yankees.)

Then came the real fun:  Celebrity Chef Night.  The big shots were none other than various counselors bringing forth their mother’s best recipes. With the help of Charmion and her kitchen staff, plus the likes of Bill (Temple of Smoke guru) and Taylor, a real feast awaited the boys at 6 PM.

“Mr. Wiff requests that everyone dress up for the event,” came the announcement over the PA system.  You’ll witness some phenomenal costumes, and especially Paul, shown in blazer and bright orange pants, along with some guys just back from hikes, i.e. Jaden U in the same photo.

We ate like kings.  Bill’s lamb shanks were devoured and the crab cakes and other exotic dishes too numerous to mention drew those thumbs ups from just about everyone.  Bill lead the entire camp on a pre-dessert walk up and down the camp hill. I could have shown several photos of guys stretched out on the ground but elected instead to feature Jaden B with arms thrust outward to capture the mood of complete content that ensued.

The day ended with fast action (on full stomachs!!!) at the Senior basketball intra-camp tournament under the lights.  “Ferocious” is the best adjective to describe the scene and it was nearly 10PM before we succeeded in chasing all the campers back to their cabins for a much needed night’s rest before Slacker Day — which assuredly will drain their energies anew.
