Sepia Colors
July 16, 2026
The pic I selected as my featured photo is not right. We don’t have those colors in the morning at Kingswood. An eerie omen perhaps? Nah, smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted south and into our area. No body noticed anything adrift except that weird tone to the skies above. I read somewhere that folks should be cautious and stay indoors if possible. Yeah, sure.
Actually, out of an abundance of caution, we deferred on a couple of hikes but that was more due to predictions of 90 + degree temperatures. The sun, instead of bright and searing, appeared as a hazy orange orb that had the effect of lowering the temps considerably. Lots of folks happily accepted that bargain.
In my photo album, right after the photo of the laundry waiting to be picked up by the cleaners from Plymouth, NH, you can find a few morning photos to show you that discoloration. (Editor’s Note: Sara just posted a fabulous album that cancels all of my photo suggestions. Wow!)
By the end of rest hour, however, the winds picked up a lot which had the effect of blowing all the smoke away and rendering Mother Tarleton a solid 5 on our wind scale (0-6 ratings.) This development charged up our sailors but we were careful to permit only boys who are certified for a “5 wind” to take out a craft.
I took some photos from the convenience of my cottage porch, which makes them grainy but not from the smoke. That same white Zest sailboat capsized twice and was paid a complementary visit from the rescue skiff. I forgot to find out who those boys were, but they got going again without needing any assistance. They will remember this occasion with great fondness.
The giant sandcastle scheme, constantly changing in design, continues without abatement.
By dinnertime the haze had fled completely and we were back to Sparkler conditions. Every nice evening produces those genuine sepia hues and long shadows. Alice and I ventured out in the golf cart to find examples of campers luxuriating in this fabulous setting.
But it got cold (not cool but cold) as twilight beckoned and we went back to our cottage, still warm inside from the day’s heat.
If you wish, go back to Week 3 counselor photos. Those fishing photos were taken on Lake Tarleton, where the angling is terrific. The other day, I was actually in the lake swimming laps when there was a commotion among some boys fishing from the dock. Seems that Drake had dropped his rod and it sank. Somebody jumped in and dove to the bottom to retrieve it. Upon hoisting the rod back onto the dock, I heard Drake holler that a fish was on the line. A 14 inch bass!
Lastly, we have had ice cream reunions with Merriwood and Lochearn for brother/sister combos in the past few days. I see my three granddaughters with Liam in the first photo of that set.
No parent or grandparent accompanied the Kingswood contingent. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
