Sleeping it off

July 5, 2026

Sunday mornings are “resets” at Kingswood where we pause, take a breath and organize both our gear and our minds in anticipation of the week to come. I call it “Deep Scrub” and Mike has posted the agenda for the morning:

The campus clean-up chores are assigned by cabin and mostly involve tidying up venues, gathering lost and found and picking up trash.

This goes on until 11 am, whereupon cabin meetings commence. In these, boys are engaged by their counselors to express feelings on the health and happiness of the cabin community. Those counselors have been trained to negotiate these councils fairly and effectively.

At noon, we meet as a camp and hear the best ideas to come out of cabin meetings as well as go over the schedule for next week.

Breakfast went off a half-hour later than normal and I will post this blog before I edit the photos taken last evening.

Back to yesterday. I left off at 6pm, when we enjoyed the first picnic of the session. Speaking of counselor training, we had a serious discussion of “picnic protocol” during orientation week and it showed last evening. Though mostly sugar-saturated from the day’s intake of candy, boys ate heartily, basically remained at their tables, and cleaned up when prompted.

Think about how picnics might go in the absence of the above!

The main events after dinner were the unveiling of cabin coats of arms or shields.  Kudos to the counselors who were clearly invested in making this activity, too, a source of humor and happiness with the July 4 celebrations.

A really good camp concert and the traditional fireworks both concluded the day of celebration and prompted me to the title of today’s blog.

Both Sara’s and my photos to come soon.
